Houston, We have a Problem!

Being sleep-deprived makes a person cranky, moody and just affects a whole bunch of body functions. It is a rubbish feeling but for astronauts who dedicate most of their lives in space, it is one of the worst feelings. A number of astronauts in the International Space Station (ISS) are suffering from insomnia. Though there are medications, we certainly do not want drug-induced astronauts to work on the future of our planetary system.

NASA thinks so too, which is why they came up with the idea of using LED lights to produce moods that can induce natural drowsiness. This is similar to the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) where light therapy is used to improve the mood of those affected with the disorder. Blue light is used to enhance energy in those affected with SAD where in the astronauts with insomnia will be treated with red lights to induce sleepiness.

The lights are still subject for testing and hopefully, we won't be worried about the future of our Universe being dealt with zombie-like astronauts.
