Solar-Powered LED Lighting

Light centers will be installed across rural Africa by 2015. Royal Philips Electronics has launched this new initiative that will create areas of light to the rural communities which have lived without electricity. The first 40 light centers will be installed late this year, focusing on schools that are closely linked to villages and towns in off-grid or semi-grid areas. Philips will also provide communal areas that can be used for activities such as sport, healthcare, commerce, and social. Thus, extending the days of the people by enabling communal life after dark, creating safe areas, and supporting sanitation. 

This initiative is not something new. Philips has completed installing light centers in a number of Africa countries – Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa. The company also enabled the World’s first soccer game to be played under solar-powered LED floodlighting in Nairobi, Kenya.

According to the President of Philips Lighting, the local reactions have been extremely positive. “Philips’ aim is to create awareness for what is now possible. We are introducing the first generation of solar powered LED lighting solutions which can provide high quality, sustainable and reliable lighting for off-grid communities in Africa; indeed the world. It is now a question of how much the world is willing to invest”.

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while.  I’ve been busy with yet another move.  This time, we’ve landed in Texas – temporarily – hopefully.  We may head back to Phoenix, but for now, we’re here.  But I’m so entrenched in this blog that I can’t stop seeing LEDs wherever I go.  I guess it’s a sickness.

While we were still in Phoenix, we went to a grocery store – yup a grocery store – with a Starbucks inside it.  There were two placards on the wall near the stand.  One said something about the water they use and the other said that the stand used energy saving techniques such as the installation of LED lighting.  I had taken a couple pictures – of the sign and of some lights that were actually on, but for some reason can’t find them now.  I suspect my son deleted them while playing with our phones.

Also, while in Texas, we’re staying with my husband’s mom and stepdad.  They have a pool in their backyard – much to my fish of a son’s delight – with a floating LED light for night use.  It’s not the best light in the world for illuminating an entire pool for night swimming, but it’s good at lighting a certain area.  It can also change colors between red, blue, green and this violet like color that seems to be a mix of the other three colors.  Pretty cool.

Other than that, I’m still trying to recover from the couple weeks of packing and travel.  I’ll do better on the next post – I promise.

After a great week of my mom being in town, things have settled down now that she’s gone home.  We spent 4-6 hours out in the HOT Arizona sun nearly every day – either at the pool or at the water park (my son conned TWO water park visits out of Grandma!)  After all that fun, my mom and I were shocked when he didn’t seem to care much that I was taking her to the airport.  He gave her a big hug and kiss, said “Bye Ma’ama!” and went back to watching YouTube videos.  Even tonight, he only asked “Ma’ama’s back in Mitch-ah-gAn? (That’s how he says “Michigan”).  Don’t think all the fun has kept me from watching out for LEDs though.  I see more and more cars with LED lights lately.  It’s interesting how the LEDs are used too.  The LEDs border the light unit, with no single beam in “the middle”.  But today’s entry isn’t about cars.  It’s about a new LED area light by MaxLite®.

The company recently introduced a new LED Area Light for the commercial/industrial market.  The lights come in 70-, 100-, and 140-watt models.  MaxLite® has designed the new LED Area Lights – replacements for metal halide and high pressure sodium outdoor lights of up to 400-watts – and joins the MaxLED® family of flood lights that offer the same wattages.

The new lights, which can be used for area or pedestrian lighting applications, have been approved by the DesignLights Consortium (DLC): a collaboration of utility companies and regional energy-efficiency organizations that are focused on promoting the awareness of energy-efficient lighting in commercial buildings.

Each of the three bulb types incorporates MaxLite®’s patent-pending optic/thermal transfer technology.  The 70-watt bulb is designed to replace a 250-watt metal halide fixture and provides a 67 CRI, 4141 lumens and a 68-lumens-per-watt efficacy.  The 100-watt bulb replaces a 320-watt metal halide and offers a 68 CRI while giving off 6963 lumens at an efficacy of 68-lumens-per-watt.  The 140-watt model, which delivers 8,400 lumens at an efficacy of 60-lumens-per-watt, replaces a 400-watt metal halide.

The new LEDs operate with a universal driver on electrical systems ranging from 120 to 277 volts, and, like many LEDs, have a life of 50,000 hours (at L70 standards).  All three fixtures are available in 5000K (daylight) correlated color temperature.  The 16.5”x16.5”x7.5” lights have a standard 6” fixture arm, with an optional 12” arm.  A fixture on the black ceramic frit mask on tempered glass reduces glare.

Once again, I’ve been MIA for a while.  This being unemployed is hard work!  And now my mom’s here for a visit, so we’re busy with her.  There’s almost not enough hours in the day.  Added to that, there has been very little to report on in the LED world.  It’s hard to write about nothing.  But it’s not “nothing” that’s happening in China when it comes to LED.

At last month’s 17^th Annual Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition – the most influential and comprehensive lighting and LED event in Asia – a record number of attendees streamed through the doors to see what a record number of vendors had to offer – which included several LED products.  The show ran concurrently with Guangzhou Electrical Building Technology, which supports the electrical engineering and building and home automation industries and Building Solar China – Conference and Exhibition featuring integrated solar technologies and other smart solutions for building.

The show, which included 1,900 exhibitors, displayed a wide range of LED technology and products.  The exhibitors and their products were split into categories: retrofit lamps and lighting fixtures, raw material, manufacturing and processing equipment, manufacturing and inspection equipment, substrate and packaging materials, epitaxial wafers; chips and packaging; components and modules, as well as drivers and controls.  U.S.-based exhibitors such as CREE, GE, and Philips Lumileds, joined with Asain companies to bring a varying collection of LED products. In fact, Philips set up two large booths – one for “general lighting” and the other specializing in its LED products.

The exhibition was held June 9-12 at the China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou.
